Since leaving Beijing, we’ve travelled by train down through the centre of China, via Datong, Pingyao, Xi’an, Chengdu and are now in Kunming, just north of the borders between Vietnam, Laos, Burma, India and near Tibet.

A short post… returned to Beijing after the hike on the wall, swapping our lovely courtyard hotel in a hutong for a bland but centrally located hotel while we organised our trip south (North/Central Thailand still looking dire with the floods and 10 Chinese soldiers were just murdered on the Mekong River according to CCTV – Chinese State TV – the route we intended to take in a couple of weeks – eek)

At least it’s rained and the smog has cleared long enough for us to actually see Beijing! I thought I’d have to photoshop a blue sky into some of our photos like the postcards here do.

It actually lives up to the hype. We visited a section of the wall that hasn’t been ‘upgraded/restored’. Astounding. We passed six other people in 2 days of trekking along this stretch of the wall.

Spent some time being a tourist in Beijing, planning the next leg of our trip down through China to the border with Laos. It’s not looking good for our plans to head into Northern Thailand with the terrible flooding that’s going on there.
